Rainy afternoons don’t have to mean screen time. With a few household basics, you can turn a gray day into a mini craft club right at your kitchen table.

Getting set up

Before you start, clear a table and grab a trash bag for scraps. Most of these projects take fifteen to thirty minutes and use things you already have on hand.

What you’ll need

  • Cardboard from the recycling bin
  • Old magazines or newspaper
  • Tape, glue, and scissors
  • Whatever crayons or markers survived last week

1. Cardboard box town

Cut windows and doors into small boxes to build a tiny cardboard neighborhood. Kids can paint each building a different color and line them up along a hallway.

2. Magazine collage creatures

Tear (not cut) shapes from old magazines and glue them together into silly animals. Torn edges give the collage a fun, textured look.

The mess is part of the fun, so give yourself permission to let this one get messy.

3. Paper plate weaving

Cut slits around the edge of a paper plate and weave yarn or ribbon through them for an easy first weaving project.

4. Sock puppet theater

An old sock, two buttons, and a marker are all you need for a puppet. Drape a blanket over two chairs for an instant stage.

5. Kitchen-table science jars

Layer water, oil, and food coloring in a jar for a simple density experiment that doubles as a craft-table centerpiece.

Keep the ideas coming
